Delhi students win NASA Space Settlement Contest with Underwater Settlement design.

National Space Society (NSS) conducts an annual competition in collaboration with the NASA Ames Research Centre which invites students from around the world to come up with design ideas for future orbital space settlements.
Two students from Delhi, Shashwat Goel and Ankita Phulia (Delhi Public School) won the competition this year with their design to house people underwater. Their student mentor, Aditya Sengupta, came up with the idea of drawing similarities between space and the oceans. Together, they designed an economically viable underwater settlement under the Dead Sea that is beneficial for the marine life too.
This unconventional entry impressed the judges and the student duo were surprised to hear that they had bagged the prize. Shashwat, a member of the team attended the National Space Society’s 36th annual International Space Development Conference in May to represent the project and interact with other attendees.
